ABOUT
Melati ESP, the electronic project of Young Magic and Asa Tone’s Melati Malay, released their euphoric debut LP, hipernatural in April 2023. Drawing on the music era of her teenage years growing up in Jakarta – Javanese radio Dangdut, gamelan cassettes, Moving Shadow-era liquid jungle, Japanese chill-out, etc. – as well as her current work in progressive percussion trio Asa Tone, Malay’s solo debut is boldly borderless, bridging worlds and wavelengths into a richly imagined hybrid synthetic utopia. To celebrate the release they have released a six-track remix EP by friends and collaborators titled adaptations.
Seoul dream duo (and Melati ESP’s recent touring partners) Salamanda [Good Morning Tapes, Wisdom Teeth] open the collection with a wondrous, psychotropic reimagining of KITA VS MEREKA, deconstructing Melati’s hyperreal vocals and masterfully weaving them back together into a euphoric textural landscape.
NYC via CDMX via Detroit sound specialist and Asa Tone member Tristan Arp [SLINK, 3024, Unknown-Untitled] quickly steps up the pace with a spritely slice of deft dancefloor hedonism, reconstructing ANDA KATAKAN into a perky, pointillistic club-ready form, road tested on various systems and Boiler Room sets over the last few months.
Timedance wonderkid Air Max ’97 comes through with polyrhythmic percussive workouts and low-end artillery for ITU CUKUP! (That’s Enough!) sharing a sweet peak-time crossover tool, pairing Melati’s vocals with black hole subs in this unique bass-bin stomper.
Fresh off his recent collaboration with Björk, Kasimyn’s genius is on full display here as he offers a new vision from his usual work with Indonesian legends Gabber Modus Operandi presenting a delicate, long form and ultimately profound reworking of KUPU KUPU ELEKTRONIK (Electronic Butterfly) in which he masterfully reworks Melati’s original lyrics “dekolonisasi pikiran mu” or in English “decolonize your mind.”
hipernatural co-producer and founding member of Asa Tone, Kaazi [Leaving Records, 100% SILK] re-imagines INTUISI as a sensitive spectral multiverse, pairing Melati’s delicately cracked vocal with deep space lows and crunchy saturated fractal electronics, crucially suited for the after hours, backrooms, 5am sets, et al. “Somewhere between home listening and the club.”
Rounding out this diverse collection across various styles and continents, Javanese-born Bali-based upcomer Sattle (Plumbah) dives into an exquisitely produced 10 minutes of liquid DnB euphoria, effortlessly moving across hypereal 160bpm moods and half time breaks in this sparkling, ecstatic rework of DI ATAS.
